We expect to see an engine under a car's bonnet. So it can be a little disconcerting to know what to expect when you invest in a brand new electric car for the first time.

Plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) are very different to petrol and diesel vehicles – the drive motor, traction battery and electronics need minimal attention.

However, it is important to note that they still require servicing and repairs. Plus, just like a conventional car, certain parts will need to be checked on a regular basis to ensure that your vehicle remains safe and roadworthy.

These include:

  • Tyres
  • Brakes
  • Battery
  • Fluid levels
  • Oil
  • Windscreen wipers

Just like a regular car with an internal combustion engine (ICE), a little routine maintenance will go a long way when it comes to a vehicle's longevity!

Tyre care

Did you know that electric cars need specific tyres in order to cope with any extra weight and the difference in accelerating power. Electric vehicles' tyres will also have reduced rolling resistance and are designed to create less noise than standard tyres.

With this in mind, you will need to rotate them according to the owner's manual, check your tyre pressure to ensure they're well inflated and replace them when the tread depth wears down. Wheel alignment is also important when looking after your tyres.

Brakes

EVs use two braking methods – conventional and regenerative braking. Energy is lost when a vehicle slows down; when it comes to an electric car, this is converted back into stored energy in the battery. This conversion makes braking more efficient, resulting in less wear and tear on the vehicle's brake pads as they do not need to be used as much.

However, just like a traditional car, you will need to check and replace brake pads (even though they will almost certainly last longer than an ICE vehicle's pads) and brake discs when they are worn and change brake fluid when required.

Battery maintenance

The battery life of an electric car has been designed to be incredibly robust, but don't assume that it will remain healthy without any maintenance. A battery needs to be charged according to the owner's manual and should never run down completely. Most electric car batteries work best when 20% to 80% charged.

Make sure you refer to the manufacturer's manual when charging your electric vehicle's traction battery.

Fluid levels

Electric car owners should not forget about fluid levels; windshield washer fluid is a must irrespective of whether you own a petrol, diesel or electric vehicle. However, the majority of electric cars require coolant to manage the temperature of the battery. The levels vary depending on makes and models, and most cooling systems are sealed. This means that they will need to be checked and topped up by a qualified electric vehicle technician.

Oil

Electric vehicle engines don't need engine oil or oil changes in the traditional sense. However, the oil used inside their reduction gearboxes may need changing at some point.

Windscreen wipers

It goes without saying that clean, effective wiper blades are a necessity for every car, van, truck or lorry, no matter what is under the bonnet!

Electric Car Repairs

Electric cars need less maintenance than conventional cars and they have been proven to be more reliable. This means that although you may pay more upfront, the running and maintenance costs are likely to be lower, with fewer repairs overall.

However, drivers do need to be aware that electric vehicles are not totally infallible. Parts can go wrong; these are usually down to battery issues, punctures, air conditioning, and the cabin air filter.

Electric car servicing

Servicing an electric vehicle is not nearly as complicated as a car with an internal combustion engine. There are no moving engine parts – just a battery.
